Electus 2015: Pao Fondevilla for 4th Year Batch Representative

What do you think is the main problem that the law school community is facing now and how would you address it?

The nature of the relationship of the school administration with the student body results in a muffled but real strain. This, in turn, translate into a general disinterest of the student body in academic affairs. The plan is to closely communicate with the administration our concerns in very clear terms about the things that they have implemented or are about to implement. This doesn’t mean causing them to change their mind in our favor although that is an ideal result. It’s about responsibility, transparency, and accountability in that we do all that we can to know what it is exactly that they want, then make suggestions in its implementation, and finally, to render to the student body a full account of how the discussion went.

What is one idea that you would like the student council to implement next year?

Aside from the above thrust to keeping the student body constantly informed, a thesis preparation program which would include mock defenses paneled by lawyers and speech specialists who would critique both the thesis’ content and way the proponent delivers it. While thesis is commonly an individual effort, it doesn’t have to be. The program gives students access to preparation normally available only to those belonging to organizations which have a battery of alumni lawyers. Here, they not only have their adviser to check their work but they benefit from the perspectives of other lawyers and students alike.

How will your projects adjust to next school year’s calendar shift?

So far, the only program affected by the academic calendar shift is thesis. Synchronizing the programs would require coordination with the school administration regarding defense schedules so as to prioritize students who will be defending their thesis first to undergo their mock defense.
